In 2009, I visited Jeffery Scott Turner’s lab in Namibia on assignment for National Geographic to watch him watch macrotermes build their mounds. Scott is a creative observer, a restless thinker, a really great writer, and a generous person. I came back two more times, and also visited him at work at SUNY.

The article on his work didn’t come out until 2014. Here it is.

But the immersive experience of seeing the mound’s through Scott’s eyes eventually inspired Underbug.
